Right in the heart of Lan Kwai Fong, Common Room has taken over an upper level space located on Wo On Lane. With a lofty and comfortable feel, the bar-cum-restaurant evokes a definite sense of cool. Common Room is spacious, large, and designed with industry in mind. The leather chairs and booths, the engineered chevron oak flooring and the wrought iron lighting fixtures all provide an effortless ambiance in which to enjoy one of the mixologists’ many delectable cocktails. Hailing from some of Hong Kong’s best bars, the team never ceases to concoct tasty and experimental drinks. A definite favourite is the Kiss from a Rose made from vodka, lychee liquor and lemon juice topped with a homemade rose foam and petal garnish. The drink is light, sweet and, as expected, airy. The old fashioned appears strong with a hint of refreshing citrus from the rolled orange peel suspended in the drink. We also got around the sampling one of their latest drinks, the Young and Beautiful, which was made up of vodka, fresh mango and lemon juice and finished with a hint of ginger and vanilla. The drink was topped with a piece of homemade dehydrated mango rubbed with chili and homemade ginger candy, which made for a complete experience. Whilst at Common Room, we also managed to sample some of the tapas on offer. The bar also serves as a restaurant for lunch and dinner service, offering up some world-inspired tapas that don’t disappoint. The wagyu beef burgers are a definite favourite amongst the many appetising choices. Although the food is meant for comfort, it is often finished with a flourish. For example, the figs are topped with molecular goat cheese “raviols” (soft globes of cheese made using the spherification technique) and the foie gras is topped with homemade apple “caviar”. If you’re looking for a cool, new and convenient hangout in the heart of town, this has got to be it.
