Harbourside gets straight to the point with its name, as it resides on the lower-ground level of the InterContinental Hong Kong, looking right out onto the Avenue of Stars and Victoria Harbour beyond. While the cafe stays opens from early morning until late night, serving everything from hotel breakfasts to champagne brunch, it’s the dinner buffet that packs out the space daily. Three key stations impress with their plentiful offerings. First, the chilled seafood bar offers towers of juicy lobsters and sweet snow crab legs, plump clams and marinated abalone—the only glaring omission is fresh oysters. Then there’s the main hot food counter, which has prime rib, leg of lamb and a foie gras station (the livers cooked to order) as well as rotating specials such as fish tacos. Given the pedigree of the hotel’s Chinese kitchen, the bowls of double-boiled chicken soup with fish maw are expectedly snapped up each time chefs come to replenish the tray. Finally, the desserts station is perhaps one of Hong Kong’s most impressive, with all manner of baked goods both Asian and European. Keep your ears open for the chime of the xylophone, which indicates the arrival of freshly baked mini chocolate soufflés or other specials of the day.
