The Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards are underway and will be presented later this month in Bangkok, Thailand. Before the final top 50 list is announced, a few of this year’s special awardees have already been revealed, such as local champion May Chow who received the Asia’s Best Female Chef award last month. Adding to the list of accolades for Hong Kong and Macau is chef Umberto Bombana of 8 ½ Otto e Mezzo, who has just been announced as winner of this year’s lifetime achievement award.
A native of Bergamo in Northern Italy, chef Bombana excels in presenting a contemporary and inventive approach to his culinary creations, all while paying homage to honest ingredients and great produce in his cooking throughout his career. 8 ½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana opened in 2010 in Hong Kong, followed by Shanghai in 2012 and Macau in 2015. He also opened casual Italian eatery Ciak in both Central and Taikoo.
The award highlights chef Bombana’s skill for pushing boundaries in promoting Italian cuisine with innovation. In honour of the recent accolade, chef Bombana is set to host a invite-only celebration dinner on February 13 at 8 ½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana in Central, featuring a unique eight-course dinner showcasing creations that will soon be launch on the spring menu, including confit abalone carpaccio, burrata cheese ravioli, Challans duck and black truffle gelato for dessert.
