So many cafes, so little time – yet, every once in a while there will be a new opening that is just that much more eyecatching than all the others. Located on the top of Hill Road and moments below the Hong Kong University campus is Ethos, a stylish venue that is split into several spaces, one of which is an airy and impeccably designed café. A mixture of table seating, high seats and counter spaces overlooking the quiet pavement is available, with many taken up by a fashionable array of patrons. In terms of food, the offerings are simple but adequately put together. A salad of smoked salmon and ricotta featured fresh greens and an expertly splayed avocado half, while an all-day breakfast included scrambled eggs, pork sausage, bacon, tomato, salami and, oddly, French fries. Other dishes include panini, mussels and comfort foods such as pasta and risotto. For the price, the ingredients could have been better quality and executed more deftly – the meats were on the dry side. The flat white we had was on the light side, so if you want more of a hit, request an extra shot or a smaller cup. Generally, we like the vibe and the service is friendly, and in many ways the look and feel is very much like those cafes we love in cities like Melbourne, London or New York City – but in terms of food and drink, it still has some way to go before becoming a destination café.
