Di King Heen is located in Royal Plaza Hotel, located a short walk from the central hub of Mong Kok, Designed traditionally, with plenty of space and big, round tables that favour bigger groups rather than couples, the establishment is both opulent and modern, with a colour scheme of modest silver and light gold underscored by lavender and purple. Clientele range from families to serious business types, and we enjoyed our food with a comfortable buzz of conversation as a backdrop that never swelled to the obnoxiously noisy levels.
With a truly encompassing menu offering up the most basic of Cantonese staples (barbecued filets of Kurobuta pork with honey sauce) to more contemporary, innovative creations (marinated wax apple and guava in preserved plum sauce and cabbage rolls with vegetables), Di King Heen’s dishes are delicious and reasonably portioned; we could order enough types of dishes to share and sample while feeling full at the end of our meal. With premium ingredients and the kitchen’s mastery of cooking, even the simplest of dishes such as the aforementioned barbecued pork and fried rice were elevated to haute cuisine of such quality that they became the favourites of the evening. While more modern and westernised dishes are on the menu (the apple and guava starter and a medley of desserts), classic Cantonese is clearly the restaurant’s strength. Alongside the pork, which was succulent, with just a hint of sweetness, and the well-balanced, subtle and flavoursome fried five grains rice with scallops and tomatoes, we very much enjoyed the steamed cod fish fillet with tofu and ginger in lotus leaf, which was delicate, aromatic, and a perfect marriage of flavours and textures.
A reasonably extensive wine list features tipples from Chile to Italy to South Africa by the glass or bottle, including blends and champagnes. Every month sees four special “wines of the month”. For those who prefer something a little stronger, a wide range of shots and classic cocktails are available.
Inconspicuous and helpful, the servers were attentive from the moment we were seated to when we paid the bill. Our waiter gladly answered our questions about the menu.
You’ll get what you’re paying with generous portions and premium ingredients. Going with bigger groups and sampling a selection of dishes is best.
