Located on the upper ground floor of Lang Kwai Fong’s California Tower, JinJui presents a unique blend of Korean tradition in a contemporary and vibrant style. Ascending the short stairs from street level you are immersed in a cavernous interior of traditional woods interlaced with colourful norigai tassels that hang ceremoniously above. Attention to detail is revealed in the beautifully painted Cranes flying across the ceiling’s air-conditioning ducts. A modern bar and a mural walled dragon seemingly chasing the Cranes creates a unique and vibrant atmosphere. Walls of glass open to the street allow the bustle to permeate creating a lively addition to the open restaurant. Tables are spaced marginally too close together but JinJui is designed for larger parties rather than romantic dinners.
JinJui brings the traditional flavours of Korea to a new audience with innovative interpretations presented in a contemporary style. Excellent quality ingredients compliment a range of enticing menu options and a starter of pajeon and tempura vegetables does not disappoint. A wonderful light and crisp batter over moist red bell peppers, shimoji mushrooms and a beautifully delicate Korean vegetable pancake is outstanding. A covering of light and aromatic kale crisps finalises this excellent dish. The grade nine Korean Hanwoo sirloin is testament to the skills of the chef. Prepared medium rare the quality of the meat is unmatched and whilst served with a spiced mayonnaise and soy sauce it would be a travesty to obliterate the natural flavours of the Hanwoo sirloin which simply arouses the senses with its indulgent essences. A dessert of snickers hotteok is a signature creation of Chef Judy Joo and reflects American influence in Korean culture. A traditional flat Korean doughnut filled with salted caramel and roasted peanuts paired with homemade chocolate ganache is a heavenly combination.
An excellent and diversified wine list with small boutique offerings from around the world and with many available by the glass. However, the range of Soju available is the real wonder and suggestions to pair regional flavours enhancing the overall dining experience.
Excellent service from the moment you are greeted politely and shown to your table. A good understanding of the menu allows questions to be answered assuredly and alternate choices to be chosen that may compliment the overall dining experience. A visit from the chef to ensure the satisfaction of his team’s cooking was a nice gesture.
An evening meal for two with wine or Soju will cost just over $1,200.00. Perhaps a little expensive but for Korean food with a new twist it is an affordable indulgence.
