The Chinese restaurant at the Mandarin Oriental Grand Lapa has the look, with a beautiful golden-lit entrance to welcome guests. It also boasts an elegant feel to it with bright colours, warm carpets, tastefully done chandeliers, and decorative Chinese art and vases. It’s altogether a traditional Chinese look in a modern setting. The restaurant seats 350 persons and the space includes eight private rooms. The tabletop settings are pretty much all brand new, which include neatly pressed white tablecloths, beautiful gold-rimmed presentation plates, white Narumi bone China, polished silverware with a sparkle, decent wine glasses and a simple but attractive plant centerpiece.
Offering high-quality traditional dim sum and no-frills Cantonese a la carte menus, Kam Lai Heen also does Chinese banquets at reasonable prices. For dinner, the Beijing roasted duck is professionally carved by the waiting staff and the skin is delicately wrapped in soft succulent bite size pancakes at your table. This was followed by the rest of the duck meat, which came presented as a tasty and comforting soup. From the seafood section, the prawns with mixed garlic are fresh and delicious, the shellfish steamed and served in mini bamboo baskets. Steamed fillet of silver cod in oolong tea flavoured soup is a signature item from the restaurant, featuring one piece of perfectly cooked silver cod fish in a golden-coloured broth that is light and full of flavour. Try the platter with two choices from the excellent barbecue section, which includes the succulent sliced honey barbecued pork and the extra crispy roasted pork. To end the meal, fresh fruits were offered, which we gladly accepted thinking it was complimentary – however, we were charged MOP48 per plate.
After negative reviews for the wine list last year, the management has acted on it and now provides eight house whites and nine house reds international wines by the glass. The overall wine selection is so much better now, due to the amount of thought that went into its renewal.
We experienced competent service, and the staff are genuinely friendly and attuned to the needs of diners. The manager seems to be well-versed with the menu.
A dinner for two should cost around MOP800, and far less for a dim sum lunch. For the quality of cooking here this is rather excellent value in our eyes.
