Swathed in mint green hues, light, warm woods, and soft lighting, La Locanda provides a pleasant escape from the hustle and bustle of Harbour City mall. Mediterranian tiles and rustic wooden floors give the space a look of an Italian trattoria, and the semi-open kitchen gives a glimpse of chefs preparing dishes and waiters shuttling back and forth. The restaurant also offers ‘outdoor-area’ seating options, which are basically out in the mall. If you’re looking to avoid the shopping mall noise and hubbub, we recommend asking to be seated inside for a more relaxed and cosy atmosphere.
La Locanda serves up classic Italian fare focusing on cuisine from the northern regions. We ordered the Tagliere di Salumi to share between the both of us. The chef’s choice of Italian charcuterie was a generously portioned and complemented by marinated olives and a savoury relish that brought a flavourful punch to cold cuts. The Saltimbocca, Spinaci e Salsa al Tartufo Nero featured nicely cooked veal, with creamy baby spinach that proved to be an excellent addition to the dish. The course was elevated by black truffle sauce that brought a classic and comforting flavour. The Tortelli alla Carbonara consisted of a classic, homemade tortellini filled with egg, Parmesan cheese and crispy pancetta. The tortellini was cooked to perfection, although the filling could have used more zest. However, the crispy pancetta made up for the blandness, bringing a smoky, salty tang to the dish and a crunchy texture that paired beautifully with the tortellini. Although satisfying, the portion was a tad too small as a main on its own. Dinner is not complete without dessert, and La Locanda offers a good selection of satisfying choices such as the trustworthy Tiramisu with soft and velvety mascarpone cream, a bold punch of Espresso coffee and rich flavours of dark chocolate that was a lovely end to our meal.
La Locanda offers a wide-ranging list of Italian wines, categorised by region of origin. Although the focus is on Italian grapes, you’ll easily find wines from around the world as well. Plenty of options are available both by the glass and by the bottle, and you can easily put your trust in the staff’s recommendations.
The service was friendly and quick, without feeling rushed. The servers were accommodating and demonstrated good knowledge of the menu. When served, each dish was confidently introduced, and the staff seemed genuinely keen on providing a good dining experience.
Dinner for two, with wine, comes to around HK$1,100. Some of the portions could be a bit more generous, but all in all the culinary experience is worth the money, especially taking the warm and efficient service in to account.
