Review

Setting

Situated in the Regal Kowloon hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui East, Mezzo Grill is as spacious as the atmosphere is relaxing and cozy, making it an environment that is perfectly family-friendly. The décor includes a glass tank of live seafood and a large wine display. The restaurant is romantically lit and ergonomic, if slightly old-fashioned.

Food

Mezzo Grill is, ostensibly, the hotels fine dining restaurant and has a wide array of steak and seafood to whet the appetite on the menu. The plethora of fine meat and seafood dishes are likely to suit most tastes, whether diners prefer a carnivorous or delicate seafood meal. The Louisiana devilled crab cakes are intensely flavoured and contain plenty of fresh crabmeat; it also comes with a small side salad and a refreshingly light yoghurt and cucumber sauce. Their signature dish, the US prime beef striploin is hearty and full of flavour, and comes perfectly cooked to our liking. The steaks themselves come unadorned, so side orders need to be ordered. Our choice of of potato au gratin is a decent accompaniment to the steaks, being deliciously creamy, cheesy, and full of potato flavour. The old-school baked Alaska is the hotel’s signature take the classic dessert and does not disappoint – it is flambéed with brandy, and there’s a lovely contrast between the hot baked texture of the meringue, its flambeed exterior, and the cool heart of ice cream.

Wine

Mezzo Grill has a fairly large master wine list with a great range of wines from the old and new world and encompasses all price ranges.  There is a good choice of wines by the glass including reds, whites, rosé, prosecco and champagne.

Service

Mezzo Grill’s tableside service is very good indeed, although it can be hard to get a servers attention at times. Otherwise, wait staff are generally attentive and their knowledge of both food and wine is fair.

Price

Dinner for two will come to around HK$600 per person with a glass of wine each, which for the service and quality of food you get, is very good value.
