Tucked away in a corner of the sprawling Venetian, North is well worth taking the effort to find. Inside, the tall ceilings provide enough space for a restaurant with all the hallmarks of traditional Dong Bei cuisine to thrive. The large central kitchen area provides all the dynamism and passion of the cuisine—dishes are stirred up in vast sizzling woks and vast quantities of noodles dough are pounded in front of your eyes.
North specialises in cuisine from the North East of China and Sichuan. This is some of the most powerful and pungent cuisine in the country—expect strong flavours of garlic, chilli and an abundance of meat. This is a place to come hungry.
It’s worth starting off with some of the chilled appetisers. The poached chicken topped with sesame and spicy Sichuan chilli sauce is refreshing, the cold meat boasts a real chicken flavour that is given an extra kick with chilli and sesame seeds.
It’s worth checking out how that Chinese classic, Peking Duck, really should taste. The meat boasts a perfect combination of flavourful duck, juicy fat and crispy skin. It pairs beautifully with the floury yet chewy pancakes and sweet hoi sin sauce.
The Sichuan Mud Crab with chilli is a smack in the mouth of flavours. Earthy pungent flavours that contrast brilliantly with the fresh light flesh of the crab.
Feeling hungry? Don’t think twice about ordering the pork and cabbage dumplings as well, meaty chewy goodness that is sure to give you that indulgent feeling of being utterly full up.
North have certainly paid more attention to the Eastern side of libations, but as they say ‘when in Rome’… There’s a great list of rice wine and hua diao and the servers are happy to recommend bottles. If you do fancy some wine from grapes then you will probably find something to please on the other side of the menu. Be sure to order from the range of premium Chinese tea.
The service is just as you’d expect in a busy northern Chinese eatery: busy and at times hectic but always warm and welcoming. The server may not spend too much time taking your order or presenting your meal but they are certainly open to give you suggestions, advice, and a little bit of banter.
A great chance to chow down on some authentic and delicious cuisine at a reasonable price, expect to be fully fed and watered for under 1000HKD for two.
