This spacious two-storey Italian restaurant at The Venetian Macao provides the ideal venue for a casual dining experience. There is an overall welcoming atmosphere, thanks in part to the high ceilings and open kitchen. A bar is found on the ground level, while the main dining area is nestled upstairs—various seating options are available to accommodate your requirements, including cosy booths and large tables, although many enjoy alfresco dining on the outdoor terrace with views of the hotel’s swimming pools.
Portofino offers both traditional and modern reinterpretations of classic Italian dishes on their menu. Divided into sections that include hot and cold appetisers, salads and soups, pastas, pizzas, and meats straight from the grills, diners have their pick of all things Italian. We begin our meal with the classic bufala alla pizzaiola, which pairs buffalo mozzarella with capers that add a touch of brininess. The fresh heirloom tomatoes in the dish provide a good contrast to the cheese. Filled with slow-braised beef, the homemade ravioli di carne presents delightful bite-sized parcels of pasta, although we felt that the meat could have used a little more seasoning to bring out the flavours in the dish. Our meal would not be complete without sampling one of the pizzas on offer, and the Parma prosciutto pizza did not disappoint. Presentation is kept simple, but this design allows the quality ingredients to stand out, including Parma ham, buffalo mozzarella, rocket and pesto.
Unsurprisingly, the main focus is on Italian labels here, although the wine list also includes a moderate selection of international labels. Bottles range from approximately MOP300 to MOP1,500, while wines by the glass can be had from MOP65 each.
Overall, servers are friendly and knowledgeable. However, service slipped towards the end of our meal, requiring several prompts for forgotten items and over 30 minutes to deliver.
A filling lunch for two, ordering from the a la carte menu, comes to approximately MOP600—a decent value considering the quality of ingredients. For even better value, visit for lunch between Monday and Saturday to savour all-you-can-eat pizza and pasta specials at a very reasonable price.
