Tango’s décor resembles a ranch house, with brick walls, wooden beams across the ceiling, sturdy tables and vintage-style posters along the walls to match a menu celebrating Argentinian beef.
We started with some empanadas, opting for the one stuffed with beef, onions and olives. The filling had a good flavour and was seasoned right but the pastry was a little on the tough side, especially along the edges. We fared better with the chorizo sausages, which came with a side of piquant chimichurri sauce that balances out the strong flavours of the sausage nicely.
After perusing the different cuts of steak that is available, we chose the ribeye for one of the main courses. The meat was tender and juicy and came with a good char but the cut could have been trimmed better as there was still some sinew along the sides. There was little fault to be found in the grilled Brazilian chicken though, which was juicy and flavoured with just a right amount of thyme and lemon.
It’s hard to take a pass on churros, the popular South American-style doughnut that is dusted with sugar and cinnamon, when it is on the menu but the ones at Tango were a little disappointing. The churros were overly soft—to the point that the first one broke when I tried to pick it up. The Fruta, however, was excellent. The combination of almond financier topped with slabs of roasted stone fruit, cream and caramel ice cream works well—the dense financier soaked up the cream while the fruit added a nice flavour to the mix.
The wine list mirrors the theme of the restaurant, featuring mostly wines from Argentina, with a generous selection of Malbec varieties.
Our table was located to the side and subsequently it was hard to catch the staff’s attention at times but once they are at the table, the service was attentive and quick.
A meal that includes an appetiser, main course, dessert and drinks adds up to $600-plus per person. While the food was good overall, it will be better if there was more consistency in the quality of the dishes for this price point.
